Compact Sewage Treatment Technology Pilot Plant Trials at Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works for Further Stages of Harbour Area Treatment Scheme

In line with the way forward as recommended by the International Review Panel (the IRP) in 2000, Pilot Plant Trials on Compact Sewage Treatment Technologies were carried out at Stonecutters Island Sewage Treatment Works (SCISTW) to evaluate the feasibility and applicability of the compact sewage treatment technologies for further stages of Harbour Area Treatment Scheme (HATS).

These trials were completed in 2003 and concluded that the Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) technology (which was recommended by the IRP) could satisfactorily treat SCISTW's effluent with its high temperature, low pH/alkalinity and high salinity.

The findings were fed into the Environmental and Engineering Feasibility Assessment Studies (EEFS).
